A performance during the Paris Olympics opening ceremony on Friday has drawn criticism from church leaders and conservative politicians, who say it mocked The Last Supper, the famous painting from Leonardo da Vinci that shows the final meal of Jesus with his disciples.

The scene, which featured drag queens dressed as priests and nuns performing a dance routine, was met with backlash on social media, with many people calling it "blasphemous" and "disrespectful." A group of bishops from the Catholic church in France also released a statement condemning the performance, saying that it "mocked the sacred mystery of the Last Supper and offended the religious beliefs of millions of Catholics."

Paris Olympics organizers have since apologized to anyone who was offended by the performance, saying that it was not their intention to cause any harm.
