Ukraine and Russia Exchange Hundreds of Prisoners of War
First Major Swap Since Outbreak of Conflict
Over 150 POWs Released in Largest Exchange of War
Ukraine and Russia have exchanged hundreds of prisoners of war in what is being described by officials in Kyiv as the biggest swap of the war. The exchange took place on Friday, May 31, and involved the release of over 150 people from both sides.
This is the first major prisoner exchange since the start of the war in February. The exchange was negotiated with the help of United Nations mediators and the International Committee of the Red Cross.
The released prisoners include soldiers, civilians, and foreign nationals. The Ukrainian government said that the exchange was a "significant step" towards ending the conflict and that it hoped it would lead to further negotiations.
The Russian government said that it was committed to continuing negotiations with Ukraine and that it hoped the exchange would help to build trust between the two sides.
